NBA 2K16 easily remains the best option out there for us
The next installment of our Midterm Reviews focuses on the popular NBA 2K16. In this review we will tackle content, graphics and presentation, gameplay, fun factor, and longevity. The Midterm Grades give a more accurate representation of the overall quality of the game because we have had almost six months to play, explore, poke and prod this game and know it now better than anyone who gave the week one review. We will take an in depth look at each mode and I will offer some suggestions on possible fixes. Sometimes, the comparison is kinesthetic and mechanical. Consider something like a drop step, a foundational offensive post-move I’ve performed and practiced and taught many thousands of times. A well executed drop step involves using your body, specifically your back and your ass, to seal off your defender to make a horizontal step to the hoop. So much about executing a proper drop step involves feeling where the defender is applying pressure to your back, so that you can take your step in the right direction. One of the most anticipated features of NBA 2K16 is the ability to scan your own face to make yourself an in-game character. You scan your face using any camera accessory for PS4 or Xbox One, and hundreds of data points are used to render your face quite realistically and accurately. According to Matt Whitaker of Hardcore gamer, this feature is tedious and could get frustrating with all the required head-turning and keeping within the sensor’s scanning zone, however, the end result is worth the effort. Improving the realism of defense was one of the biggest strides made with NBA 2K16, and that trend continued into this year. Now, there is increased friction between an offensive player and his defender, making it much more difficult to simply blow past the D.
When I think about everything wrong with the game, it usually comes back to VC. The very idea of it. The very idea that this game has been built around the motivation of a company that rakes in millions on game sales alone to continue to milk its fans for every dime and cent they can. Nearly every mechanic in the game is based around VC or MT for MyTeam mode. It’s essentially a traditional experience progression system that is presented as something that you can buy in the most blatant way possible. Sure, you can earn VC or MT simply from playing, but you’ll be behind the others that can’t wait to waste their money on beating everyone.
MyGM is like a full-team simulation with the pleasant exception that you can play all the games yourself. You choose which franchise you want to manage, then work with the owner to set goals (like making the playoffs), buy NBA 2K16 coins online managing the budget, scouting for new talent, interacting with players to get the best performance out of them, and setting your team’s tactics. In MyGM, you’re in total control of your team and the devil is in the details. Managing my roster could have been a full-time job. Players even came to me to complain that practice was too easy. Then, my superstar turned out to be a whining baby who didn’t like anything I had to say; I know if I had stuck with the game long enough he would have jumped ship. I felt more like the team shrink than a GM as I struggled to balance the different player and coach personalities. Still, it’s a great mode that kept me interested between games.
If there’s one Achilles heel for the game, at least at launch, it would be the server issues. Thanks to server woes, certain online modes were either routinely unavailable at times or experienced severe lag. Take those issues away and you end up with an otherwise stellar game. Even with its problems, NBA 2K16 remains a contender for best sports game of the year, though improvements to the latest Madden game make this contest a closer one than recent years. It’s also become a victim of its own success as the latest game may no longer feel like a big leap for players used to the high standard set by the series. As far as basketball games go, however, NBA 2K16 easily remains the best option out there.
